Show Notes

Sarah Hornbuckle’s story is one of resilience, transformation, and purpose. By the age of 20, she was already a real estate broker, and soon after became the mother of three children in just three and a half years. But behind the surface of success, much of her young adulthood was spent in relationships marked by alcoholism, domestic violence, and instability.

At 27, weighed down by trauma and exhaustion, Sarah turned to substances as a way to cope. What started as temporary relief spiraled into nearly three years of addiction that left her spiritually broken and at the brink of losing everything. In 2016, faced with the choice of giving up or fighting back, Sarah chose recovery—and it changed the course of her life.

Her journey took a remarkable turn when she reconnected with her biological family and discovered that recovery was part of her legacy: her father operated sober living homes in Texas, and her grandmother had opened one of the first women’s sober living houses back in 1991. Addiction was in her bloodline, but so was healing—and Sarah chose to carry that legacy forward.

Today, Sarah is a certified Peer Support Specialist, the lead singer of The Rick Lewis Project, and, together with her husband Michael, the co-founder of the Hornbuckle Foundation. Since 2019, their foundation has awarded more than 580 sober living scholarships, helping people bridge the critical gap between treatment and long-term sobriety.

In this powerful interview, Sarah shares her personal journey—from a series of toxic relationships to finding her biological family and discovering a legacy of recovery in her bloodline. Join us as she discusses why middle-class suburbs are often a silent epicenter of addiction, why traditional 9-to-5 jobs can be a barrier for people in recovery, and how community solutions can heal families broken by substance abuse.
