Imagine rising from unthinkable tragedy to become one of the most influential voices in Congress. That's exactly what Mary Bono did. After the sudden loss of her husband – the legendary entertainer-turned-congressman Sonny Bono – Mary stepped into a role that would transform her life and impact countless others. She didn't just fill a seat in California's 44th Congressional District; she blazed her own trail, becoming a powerhouse in American politics.
The Washington Times didn't exaggerate when they called her the "embodiment of powerful American womanhood." Mary shattered glass ceilings, becoming Chairman of the crucial House Subcommittee on Commerce, Manufacturing and Trade, and made history as the first-ever Chairman of the House Women's Policy Committee. But perhaps her most profound impact has been in the fight against addiction, where she's emerged as one of the nation's most passionate and effective advocates for prevention, treatment, and recovery.
Her alma mater, USC, recognized her extraordinary journey with their Distinguished Alumni Merit Award in 2022 – but Mary's real reward has been the lives she's helped transform through her advocacy work.
