Show Notes

The Into Light Project, a national non-profit organization, has emerged as a powerful force in changing the conversation about drug addiction through the compelling medium of art and storytelling. Founded by Theresa Clower following the tragic loss of her son Devin to an accidental drug overdose in February 2018, the project has evolved into a moving tribute to those lost to addiction.

At the heart of the Into Light Project is a traveling exhibition titled "Drug Addiction: Real People, Real Stories." Each exhibition features 41 original graphite portraits of individuals who have died from drug addiction or poisoning in the state where the exhibition is held. These portraits are accompanied by professionally written narratives that delve into the lives of the depicted individuals, offering a poignant and humanizing glimpse into their struggles and triumphs.

The project's impact extends beyond the exhibition itself. At the conclusion of each show, the original, professionally framed portraits and a catalog of narratives are gifted to the families of the deceased, providing a lasting memorial to their loved ones.

Theresa Clower discovered the transformative power of art and storytelling through her own grief journey. She found that the simple act of drawing could change minds and hearts, shedding light on those lost to addiction and revealing their spirit, kindness, humor, pain, and compassion. Her passion for changing the conversation about drug addiction drives the project's mission to end the stigma and shame associated with the disease, promoting empathy as a crucial first step in overcoming addiction.

The project's reach and impact are exemplified by stories like that of Debbie Simon, whose son Scott was featured in the Florida exhibit of the Into Light Project. This inclusion not only honored Scott's memory but also contributed to the broader narrative of humanizing those affected by addiction.

By merging artistic expression with personal stories, the Into Light Project offers a unique and powerful approach to addressing the opioid crisis. It provides a platform for grieving families to share their experiences, educates the public about the realities of addiction, and works towards fostering a more compassionate and understanding society.

Our other guest is Debbie Simon. Her son Scott was featured in the Florida exhibit of Into Light Project.
