Show Notes

Andrew Zimmern’s rise to culinary stardom is nothing short of remarkable, but his journey was far from smooth. Before becoming a world-renowned chef and Emmy-winning TV personality, Andrew battled a serious drug addiction that nearly cost him everything. After attending The Dalton School and Vassar College, Andrew cooked in top New York City restaurants under culinary giants like Anne Rosenzweig, Joachim Splichal, and Thomas Keller. Despite his success, he was secretly spiraling out of control, his addiction worsening as he opened and ran a dozen restaurants.

Eventually, Andrew hit rock bottom, spending a year homeless on the streets of New York. It was only through an intervention by close friends that he found his way to the Hazelden Foundation in Minnesota. That pivotal moment led him to embrace sobriety, and he took a job washing dishes at Café Un Deux Trois in Minneapolis. By 1992, Andrew had become executive chef, transforming the restaurant into a nationally acclaimed dining destination.

Now a four-time James Beard Award-winning chef, Andrew is best known as the creator and host of Travel Channel’s Bizarre Foods franchise and The Zimmern List. Through his work, he explores the intersection of food and culture, using his platform to promote understanding and tolerance. His latest projects include What’s Eating America on MSNBC and Family Dinner on Magnolia Network, where he continues to connect people through the universal language of food. Andrew Zimmern’s story is not just about culinary excellence—it’s a testament to the power of recovery and reinvention.
